Abstract
Understanding Hafiz and the Interpretation of Love/Ashq
Qasim Kakayi
The paper attempts to present Hafiz Shirazi in the way in which he talked about himself in his verses, with a special focus on his love/ashq view which dominates throughout his entire poetry. In order to understand Hafiz Shirazi, it is necessary to recognize the clear places in his poetry, and then interpret the less clear places, which may potentially mislead the reader in a wrong direction, in accordance with the basic clear postulates of Hafiz Shirazi. In his verses, as it can clearly be seen in this paper, the Hafiz Shirazi reveals himself to be a pious religious person, a religious scholar who lives by the Qur’an, a lover of the Beauty, a spiritual traveller devoted to the spiritual journey and the night solitude with his Beloved, one who burns in the pain of separation. Having read Hafiz’s poetry, a conclusion may be inferred that Hafiz Shirazi can be understood only by someone who bears the same pain which the poet describes in his poems.
